Abstract:

Background: Nasal obstruction due to non-allergic causes is a common health issue in the population. It is caused by septal deviation, inferior and middle turbinates hypertrophy, nasal polyposis, and nasopharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophy. In the failure of clinical control, a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the inferior turbinate is usually indicated.
Objectives: To share our experience with endoscopic powered modification of the submucous resection /turbinoplasty/ in inferior turbinate hypertrophy and to present subjective and functional results of the treatment.
Study design: longitudinal observational.
Patients and Methods: Fifty-five patients with inferior turbinate hypertrophy were treated by bilateral turbinoplasty with microdebriders. All patients underwent nasal endoscopy, Cottle’s test, and visual analog scale assessment before the operation. Fifty patients were followed for one year postoperatively and reassessed by the same tests.
Results: One year after the surgery, 50 (90%) patients were followed up. The difference between the preoperative and postoperative assessment by VAS was 2.02 points (57%) with a highly significant statistical difference of p<0.001, the functional examination by acoustic rhinometry also shows a highly significant statistical difference pre- and post-operatively.
Conclusion: Powered submucous turbinoplasty with microdebriders allows precisely controlled resection of submucosa with mucosal preservation, making this technique the method of choice enabling optimal volume reduction with preservation of function of the inferior turbinate.
